Monica Dusi

by OLIVE
Contact USA:
Designer Monica Dusi

Born and raised in Milan, Italy, Monica Dusi explored art and the world of acting since high school. Upon graduation from The International Theatre School, Monica steered her creative energies into theatre and body movement and furthered her studies with world-renowned master, Kuniaki Ida. In 2002, Monica moved to Los Angeles to attend The Colburn School of Performing Arts, and was involved in numerous visual art projects, where she developed a keen sense of creating avant-garde costumes. Monica founded the by Olive Company in 2006, with the focus of producing a line of Prêt-à-porter dresses, tops, t-shirts and handbags that are one of a kind. She uses a blend of contrasting elements: strength and fragility, modernity and tradition, strictness and fluidity. The intention is to realize an openly emotional and passionate reaction that costumers are quick to note.
Vintage and specialized fabrics are an integral part to the by Olive style. “Once I see a particular fabric, it dictates to me the piece it will become. I love to work with tulle, which gives an edge and volume to my creations.”

Gobbolino

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Gobbolino specializes in everything for the urban raving fairy. Big furry boot covers, beautiful hand customised fairy wings, skirts and head garlands in a flurry of Rainbow-Brite’esque. An unusual range of thigh-hi legwarmers, cute animal ear hats and sexy lolita lace mini skirts makes Gobbolino an original magpie find. Gobbolino was seen first on the streets of Camden Town, London and quickly became available to buy in individual clubwear and alternative shops around the UK and abroad. Heavily influenced by the street wear of the Haruko girls of Japan with their original and inspiring handmade garments. This craze has swept through to the main stream recently with Gwen Steffani’s album ‘Lamb’ where she embraces the Gobbolino style to be different. Gobbolino’s online boutique has been established since 1999 and their ever growing catalogue grows from week to week with the fast moving trends that encapsulates the new generation of cyber shoppers. “bubblegum slut magazine” says… Extremely DIY, Queen Adreena-esque fake flowers, shredded lace and chiffon and rips, saftypins, glitter, mutilated Barbie dolls and childhood imagery are staples of the style. Amid the fairy skirts, lacy bloomers and kitty ears nothing sums it up quite like the pink n punky…

Rosie Hogan

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Rosie Hogan’s collection was the most unexpected addition to an otherwise typical New York City Fashion Week. The Australian was one of only 10 talents selected worldwide to show at the Nolcha Fashion Week Parade… Her collection themed “Beyond the Pale”, a sophisticated twist of high couture and young RTW; attracted attention when it was sourced from thousands of international entries to be commissioned by the Nolcha Metier Group. Directors were so impressed they invited the teenager to be the sole designer to return for London Fashion Week, next Autumn/Winter season.
The eccentricity of this couturier was obvious to many, as soon as her first face appeared on stage. Unusual fabrics glowing in metallic, white and yellow hues, as well as double-boning borrowed from 18th Century couture; completed a look judges could not believe was created by a girl too young even to enjoy the champagne backstage… You can actually contact the designer herself when you visit: www.myspace.com/rosiehogan

First Crush

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

The idea of the First Crush bags is to bring different kinds of recycled paper to new life. Each bag is an entirely unique piece with its own personality. The bags are made, for instance, of old maps, cartoon strips, architectural drawings and gift papers which are too beautiful to be thrown away.

The First Crush bags are laminated to protect them against dampness and to give them a longer life. Young Finnish fashion designer Mari Himmanen designs and makes each bag by hand with special care.

Himmanen also designs unique evening gowns for special order. These paper dresses are very comfortable to wear and durable in use. They can be dyed and even washed.
